Electric vehicle (EV) owners were once limited by their ability to find a charging station with the correct plug that could charge their car. As time passed and more people took the plunge into EV ownership, the market responded by installing more charging stations that accommodate both specific manufacturer and general charging requirements. Home chargers also help EV owners keep their batteries topped off.

At Chris Nikel Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram FIAT, we understand the challenges EV owners face, as well as the reasons you might have bought an EV in the first place. We’ve put together this guide to help you find electric charging stations in Broken Arrow to help keep your battery full.

Types of Charging Stations

There are three different types of public charging standards that are used for EVs. They include:

  • Level 1. Commonly found at public locations, shopping centers, and workplaces.
  • Level 2. Same as level 1.
  • Level 3. Best for travelers and those who need a quick charge.

Level 1 and 2 connectors are known as the SAE J1772 plug, and all EVs in the U.S. can use this type of charger, though Tesla owners require an adapter. The Level 3 charger, known as the CHAdeMO, is only available for cars with the ability to take a fast charge.

Residential Charging

Level 1 vehicles can be charged at home with no special equipment, but they do need to be plugged into a dedicated branch circuit. Level 2 vehicles require the installation of charging equipment to reach a full charge overnight.

Charging Networks and Apps

More charging stations are being installed over time, which means the above list will grow as new locations become available. At Chris Nikel CJDR FIAT, we do our best to keep the list updated, but apps are your best bet for finding a charging network. Apps for a specific charging network can help you find a charging station with the right kind of plug for your EV. Meanwhile, general EV charging station apps show the locations of all stations in the Broken Arrow and Tulsa areas.

Charging Networks

Charging networks include companies such as:

  • ChargePoint, with 27,000 stations and almost 50,000 charging ports. Average price of $0.28 per kWh.

  • Apple Maps:  Tap your initials or picture, select “Vehicles,” then “Connect Your Electric Vehicles.”
  • EV Navigation:  Customizable to match your vehicle and charging type.
  • PlugShare:  Shows you where to find charging stations and delivers real-time data.
  • ChargePoint:  Shows in-network charging stations and other major networks.

Environmental and Cost Benefits

Switching to an EV or plug-in hybrid vehicle helps reduce your impact on the environment while enabling you to reach your destinations with convenience and ease.

Reduced Emissions

EVs don’t burn fuel and have no exhaust, although plug-in hybrids produce some emissions. Switching to either of these vehicle types results in lowered emissions and improved air quality, which is better for the environment. You may also be able to get a tax credit of up to $7,500 if you buy a qualifying plug-in electric vehicle.

Cost Savings

Internal combustion engines require gasoline to operate, which means regular fill-ups as well as maintenance over time. Battery-powered or assisted vehicles last much longer and don’t require constant fill-ups with expensive gasoline and have no need for regular oil changes. Buying an EV makes a lot of sense, especially when breaking down the cost of ownership over the long-term.

EVs Represent the Future of Automotive Transportation

The technology behind the EV gets better with each passing day, and there are plenty of solid reasons why you should consider transitioning to one. Not only does it save you money over time, it frees you from constant maintenance and elevates the joy of driving to a whole new level.
